Clarification about my Super Sweet Sight Words packet!

I wanted to clarify for you guys that you DON'T HAVE TO have the Scholastic book I mentioned to use this packet.  The Scholastic book simply adds to the packet I have created and provides you with more resources, ideas, and reproducibles.  The program I have created can certainly be your stand-alone resource.  You will simply add to it by doing your usual sight word activities and review techniques in class.  However, I do suggest the Scholastic book, because it is filled with fabulous ideas.

Here is how I will be using these resources:

If you have the Scholastic resource, it will be your primary resource as it includes daily/weekly lesson plan suggestions, group and individual activity pages, weekly and quarterly reading/spelling assessments, word cards, and more. If not, you will simply decide what you want to add to the packet I have created. Here are my weekly components:
1.Copy the word cards in the book onto colored cardstock. If you don’t have the book, simply make your own word cards by typing the words out, printing them on cardstock, and sending them home. Have parents cut these out for students on Monday night when you send them home and place them on a metal ring.  They will add their new words to this ring each week so they can constantly go back and review previous words.
2.Also on Monday, introduce the words and Words in Context sentence strips in a classroom pocket chart.  (These are found on the page described below in point 3.)
3.Place the week’s Super Sweet Sight Words (the ice cream truck page) in students’ sight word folders for them to continually refer to for reading, spelling, etc.  Students write the words on their sight word wall in their folders (this reproducible is found at the end of my packet).  These folders are kept at their desks.
4.Send home the weekly Super Sweet Sight Words homework pages (copied front/back).  These pages are not found in the Scholastic Book.  I have created these, and you will find them on the following pages.  These pages are directly correlated with each week’s sight word list and are easy to keep track of because each list and homework set is numbered with the Week number. Students will choose one of the activities to complete each night and turn the page back in with the rest of their homework on Friday.  Each nine weeks includes 4 unique activties to practice spelling and reading the sight words.
5.Follow the week’s lesson plans and activities as presented in Scholastic’s book.  You can pick and choose which activity pages you want to copy and have students complete.  If you don’t have the book, you can use sight word activities you already know and use.
6.On Friday, students will be tested on both reading and spelling the sight words to check for mastery.
7.Place the week’s sight words on the classroom word wall for students to continue to refer to.  Be sure to highlight spelling patterns, clues, etc. for recognizing the word on the word wall.  Continually draw students’ attention back to these words to retain them and apply them!
I hope this helps clarify how I think this packet can help you help your kids master sight words!  Remember to read my previous post to find out how you can win a packet TONIGHT for your own classroom! :)
