Phonemic Awareness Fun: Rhyming {Lots of FREEBIES!}

Phonemic Awareness is the understanding that words are made up of a series of separate sounds or phonemes.  Children with phonemic awareness are able to isolate or manipulate sounds in spoken words.  Phonemic Awareness is not the same as phonics.  There are five different types of phonemic awareness tasks or abilities.
1.Rhythm, Rhyme and Alliteration
2.Phoneme Categorization/Parts of a Word
3.Oral Blending & Sequence of Sounds
4.Oral Segmentation & Separation of Sounds
5.Phoneme Manipulation

Over the next few weeks, we're going to chat about the various aspects of Phonemic Awareness.  I'll also give you a FREEBIE each week and point you toward some other great resources on the web.

First up....let's talk about rhyme....one of my favorite things to do in class! :)

I love this (FREE) activity by This Reading Mama because it focuses on 3 different levels of rhyming-- picture to picture, picture to word, and word to word!  Starting on words too soon can confuse kids because, let's face it....rhyming words often have different spelling patterns!  Matching rhyming pictures is an easy way to practice and assess students' ability to recognize and manipulate rhyming words.  Go grab the freebie here:

Of course there's no shortage of amazing rhyming books.  I try to read at least one rhyming book each day.  The kids love to chime in with the rhyme!
Here's a peek at some of the best rhyming books as highlighted by No Time for Flashcards!  Click the picture to check out that fabulous blog post!1

 I love this Rhyming Rainbow idea from "A Love for Teaching!"  This would be a great center activity.  Simply provide bowls of colored rectangles and let the students be creative!  It's also a fun (nonworksheet) assessment!

Here's another variation of a Rhyming Rainbow I came up with.  You can print out the cloud from the freebie I'll share at the end of this post!
If you REALLY want to get intensive in your classroom rhyming practice, I have a whole packet devoted to Rhyming available on TPT.  It's half price right now!  You can grab it here:

Lastly, here's a little FREEBIE for you!  This includes a rhyming ladders activity you can do in centers or small groups (as well as a version students can do independently for practice or evaluation purposes).  It also includes the Rhyming Rainbow cloud for that craftivity.  Enjoy!
