AR Stars! Managing your Classroom AR Program

I don't know about you, but I absolutely LOVE AR (Accelerated Reader).  My firsties are new at it, and the devour books.  A huge part of their motivation for reading, in fact, comes from taking AR tests and scoring points.  Our school offers lots of great incentives and fun rewards for meeting quarterly and yearly goals.  One year, the kids got to ride around town in a limo if they met their goal all 4 nine weeks.  We've also taken trips to the pool and to a local movie theater to see a movie.  We've even had clowns and magicians come in as rewards.

I wanted to create an AR management and classroom display system to keep my kiddos motivated to score points, motivated to make lots of 100's on their tests, and motivated to reach their goals.  Hence, the creation of AR Stars!  Here's a peak at what's included:

If you're interested, you can check out the packet at TPT Here:

  1. In the past, I have used beads for kids when they score a 100 on a test. I had different beads for fiction, non-fiction and chapter books. At the end of nine weeks, they would make a necklace with the beads.

This pack looks fantastic! I hope I win!

  2. I love your AR Stars!!! I love to read. I'm always reading and sharing books with my students. My students are motivated to read because they sense that I'm genuinely excited about reading.

  3. This packet looks amazing! I give "caught being good" coupons for scoring at least 60% on test. Then for every 5 AR points they get to get a prize. Our school gives real medals at 25, 50, and 75 points. At 100 points they get to go to Moonlight Madness. I love for parents to read with their kids and this seems to help.

  4. I, too, love AR. We have a variety of prizes that I believe motivates them to read more. For every ten points they get a free book of their choice. But they also get things like a pencil, a special bag to carry books in, a ribbon, eating with all the teachers, reading the announcements, picking their favorite book in the library and being able to put their name plate in it, getting to sit in their locker reading a book and we take their picture and put it on a hallway bulletin board. We now use the online AR program and that has opened up a whole lot more books that we can take tests on.

  5. I absolutely love using the AR program with my second graders. Like your school. mine also provides great incentives for our students. I would say that it's the biggest factor in motivating my kiddos! I love this set that you've created! (meghan.hein@mac.com)

  6. What a great resource for implementing AR in the classroom! Our school just started using it last year, so it's all still pretty new to me. Mine were very motivated to take quizzes on the iPad and also to earn a "brag tag" for earning a good score. I need more ideas and resources to implement it more effectively!

  7. Wow this looks amazing!! I just began AR last year and it was a bit confusing for me at first. For each quiz that my kids get 100% on they get to place a sticker on a chart. When the chart is full we get a class party. Just snacks and some looney tunes but they love it!

  8. I teach first grade as well, and love using AR with my cuties. I've tried different systems for tracking points, but I'm not really happy with any of them. Last year I did the beads like Mrs. Nunley. The kids lost interest after the first month. One thing that has been successful however has been the use of cards that I have printed from Vista Print. They say: "I got a 100% on my Ar quiz!" and "when I collect 5 cards, I can turn them in for a special prize". I buy small stuffed animals, books, jewelry, etc and let them pick. My theme this year is going to be "First Grade Rocks!" so the stars would fit in well. Thanks for the opp to win!

  9. I love your AR pack!! I do AR at my school too!! Something that I do to motivate my students to read is to be part of the BOOKIT program!! Students love to get a free pizza hut pizza when they make their monthly reading goal. As for AR we do certificates after they get their quarterly goal, I also do some incentives in class like (fun pencil, sit in any seat, bring a show and tell item, etc). I'd love to add your packet to make AR even better in my classroom!! :)

  10. I've used an AR reading log. They write down the titles of the books they test on and then the score. If they make an 80 or 100 they can color in a little box on their "points sheet"(which has four squares, each made up of 25 little squares!) When they fill up a 25-box square they get a prize! Last year I forgot to even do the prizes, but they loved recording their tests and coloring the boxes anyway! :) Your packet looks great! I would like to try a recognition board this year.

  11. I like to do "RAH" - Reading at Home. The kids have a calendar and they can win little prizes for the number of minutes they read that month. The top prize is lunch with the teacher - which for some reason excites them. : ) I love your packet! AR is big at our school. We have a monthly school award ceremony.

    Thanks!

  16. I love AR too! In Second Grade students have to earn points and keep their AR % correct at 85% or higher to earn prizes. Very cute pack! Susan

  17. I make time to read to my students and I think my joy of reading shows through my enthusiasm, change in voice with the characters, change is reading style depending on the scene and my movement captures their attention - they are more willing to read and often are excited to do it. I work in a special education classroom and many of my kiddos struggle to read, but if we can spark any kind of interest - even if it means we act a bit goofy - that is a HUGE step in the right direction. Oh how I love my job and I am a school counselor. :-) I team teach with a classroom teacher, but I feel that I can show the students that it isn't just teachers who want them to be the best students they can be. :-) They get the same message from me.

  18. My kiddos love AR. For every two books they pass they receive a charm for their AR necklace. This is sooo motivating for my students. We also have quarterly rewards assemblies for those students who earn a certain number of designated points for that quarter.

  19. I LOVE AR, too. One of my teammates and I reward our second graders who meet their weekly goal with an extra 15 minutes of recess each week. My school (aka our librarian) makes AR a big deal, too. The students in our school who make their goal for each AR period (every 9 weeks or so) earn an "AR party" (ie: a movie and a slushy). Students who have the most points in each grade level are also awarded. I love your pack...it would be a great addition in my classroom!

  21. I am hoping to land my first teaching job this year. Our district is big on AR and this wonderful packet would serve as an AMAZING motivator to earn points! Who wouldn't want to see their name up on the wall?

Thanks for the chance to win a copy, Ashley!

  22. We do AR in my second grade classroom. The thing that motivates my students is when they score 80% or better on an AR test they receive a pony bead on their chain that is hanging on the bulletin board. Each student has a chain and they earn beads for passing AR tests. They get a special bead when they make their AR goal for the quarter. We also do the Book-It! program from Pizza Hut and the students love getting a coupon for a free pizza. I would love to win your AR pack. It looks amazing.

  23. We use AR too! It's such a great program to motivate them! I didn't keep track of their points very well last year and would like to do better at that this year. We also have a 25 genre book challenge that helped motivate too!

  24. I love your packet! Our school used to do a weekly presentation about AR awards, but it got to be too crazy. Now the librarian does celebrations during library time. I would love to use this within the classroom!
