EAT MORE HAM! {How to Save a Turkey's Life This Thanksgiving}

It's almost time for one of my favorite projects every year.  My kids will soon be on a quest to save a turkey's life.  The hunters will soon be on the prowl searching for the perfect Thanksgiving bird.  We've got to help hide those turkeys!

I start with a letter from Mr. Turkey (an original poem written by me)...

Then, I send directions home with the parents.

Once the projects arrive, students get to vote on three categories:  Most Creative, Best Disguise, and Most Unusual.  I post and we discuss judging criteria.  We also discuss the importance of being humble and not voting for oneself.  That's always a toughie for first graders.  *wink*

There are awards for the three winners as well as blue ribbons to proudly display on their work.  Of course, no one goes home empty-handed.  Everyone gets an award for simply saving a turkey's life.  Finally, we end our festivities with some turkey inspired literacy activities including some of the following:

  11. I love cheesy potatoes. Which are like twice baked potatoes in a casserole dish...loaded with cream cheese, sour cream and cheese. And more cheese on top for good measure! I could probably skip the turkey in favor of those potatoes!
