Join Team Lewy Body and get $163 of fabulous products for $25!

The fundraiser ended on 10/14/13.  I will update totals raised after 10/19.

My Family's Story:

When I was three years old, my mom was diagnosed with Lupus.  My sister was 7, and my brother was an infant.  Our lives changed forever.  She was incredibly sick throughout my childhood.  So, my dad stepped in and often became both mom and dad.  He owned a pharmacy and worked 80-100 hours a week, but he always had time to fix us dinner, help us with our homework, and bathe us.  Mom was often in and out of the hospital in Atlanta, and there were times we thought she wouldn't make it.  Dad was my hero then, and he never stopped being just that.

Fast forward to today, 33 years later.  My dad began having some strange symptoms...his blood pressure would bottom out to 80/40 upon standing and he would pass out.  He slept 18-20 hours per day.  His voice was weak and his speech was slurred.  He had a tremor and a stooped, unsteady gait.   He often seemed blank and in a fog.  He had recently sold his pharmacy and went to work for a chain...he couldn't learn their system or keep up, which was unlike him.  One day after taking an antidepressant he was almost catatonic.  Something was terribly wrong.  This 64 year old man looked 84 and I feared he would die at any moment.  I always felt like I was seeing him for the last time.
Dad was initially diagnosed with Parkinson's disease, but his diagnosis soon changed to Dementia with Lewy Bodies.  Ever heard of it?  It's a devastating illness that combines symptoms of two of the worst diseases ever...Parkinsons and Alzheimer's.  People lose their bodies and their minds at the same time.  What could be worse?  Our hearts were shattered.  It wasn't fair to have two sick parents.  Couldn't my child and my nieces and nephews have healthy grandparents?  Couldn't my parents have wonderful golden years to make up for the black years of my childhood?

What do you do when life gives you lemons?  You make lemonade.  What do you do when you're a Christian and times are hard?  You trust that God is in control and will never let you out of His hands.  Our family chose to do just that.  My dad, my hero, has a new mission in life.  His mission is to educate others about Lewy Body Dementia.  His mission is to see that funds are raised for research, patient/caregiver support, and awareness.  He has scheduled a huge awareness event October 19, and up until that time he is seeking to raise as much money as possible to contribute to the Lewy Body Dementia Association.
October is Lewy Body Dementia Awareness Month!

Not a penny of this money will go to my parents or my family...100% of the proceeds will go to the LBDA.  I have a dream that one day no other grandfather will have to say a long, slow, premature goodbye to his granddaughter.  Help me realize my dream.  Here are my brave, precious parents:

  2. I am so sorry that you are going through such incredibly tough times. I can't even imagine how hard this must be. As a fellow believer, I know how important faith is at times like these. God will never give you more than you can handle. It was very easy to decide to donate, and I'll do whatever I can to get the word out about this.

  7. " I have a dream that one day no other grandfather will have to say a long, slow, premature goodbye to his granddaughter. "

I read that, and I cried and cried, because I was that granddaughter. My grandfather died last May. He spent the last several years of his life in a nursing home because my grandmother was unable to take care of him. He kept falling and hurting himself, and she couldn't even get him up off the ground. When I was young (a preteen, maybe?), he was diagnosed with Parkinsons Disease. He also had dementia, which got worse and worse as the years went on. It is one of the worst things you can ever watch happen to someone you love. It completely changed his demeanor. By the end, he was completely helpless. He often didn't know who his family was. He couldn't walk or grasp anything. I know that he died last May, but in my mind, he died years ago. I think that's why thinking of his death upsets me so much- I feel like I was robbed of several years of my grandfather's life, just because of that horrible disease. I'm so sorry to unload here on your blog, but I just know how awful diseases like Parkinson's and Alzheimer's are, and I appreciate it when I see any efforts to raise money for research or just raise awareness. I want to help, but I'm not sure I will be able to donate, but I'm going to try! I will definitely spread the word- more people need to understand how horrible this is and not treat it like a joke, which I have seen before.

Thank you and your family for trying to increase awareness and raise money for research. Hopefully, through your efforts and the efforts of others, no other family will have to go through this.

  9. I lost my father to Dementia 6 years ago when he was 56. It was painful and difficult to see an amazing and strong man slowly deteriorate and no longer recognize his own family. I think it is wonderful what you are doing and am thankful for those who help bring awareness to this disease. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. God Bless!

  23. Praying for you and your family! I am watching as my grandfather is also dealing with Parkinson's and the early stages of dementia. It's so hard to see a man that has always been so strong, begin to have to rely on others to do everything for him. I am hoping my small donation can help you reach your goal!

  26. Hi Ashley,
This looks so awesome and I feel privileged to be a part. I did want you to know that I have a 1st grade version of the math mystery that you can put in either instead of the 2nd grade one or in addition to. It seems like most products are for the k-1 range, so I want people to be able to use as much of the bundle as possible. I will send that to you now. Best of luck friend!

  31. I almost skipped over this post, but I'm so glad I didn't. When our son was a little over a year old, my husband became ill. Doctors could never decide one one thing to treat him for, but it was a toss-up between lupus and rheumatoid arthritis. For several years after that our life was an up and down roller-coaster of medicines and illness that has progressed further over the past 13 years. I became the primary bread winner (and you know how much we teachers make!) and my husband became the primary caretaker. Just this past summer, our new doctor confirmed that he does have lupus, and he recently had surgery that revealed severe nerve damage. Your family is in my thoughts. I donated!! And I'll share on pinterest and fb.
