Today we started my new Jonathan London Author Study. The kids are loving it already! We focused on the literary device of Onomatopoeia today. I wrote a poem to help the students remember what this crazy long word means. We also made Onomatopoeia mini books. Today we read Froggy's Day with Dad. We searched for nouns, verbs, and adjectives around the room from the story and recorded them on a recording page. We also wrote about our own connections with the story (forgot to take pics of this one!). As we read we searched for evidence of the Author's Fingerprints and referred to our author study anchor chart for this one. We definitely found personfication, frog characters, onomatopoeia, and the repeated phrase in today's Froggy book! Here are some pics of our fun today:
I've included a freebie for you...my Onomatopoeia poem (which is not in the unit...it was a spur of the moment idea today!) as well as a copy of the Onomatopoeia Mini book (that is in the Froggy) unit. Thanks to the Bubbly Blonde for the presh border...and thanks to Kimberly Geswein and Cupcake for the adorable fonts!

Please go to the top right of my blog to the facebook fan page widget and click "Like!" {I've tried and tried to get one to pop up when people visit my page, but I haven't had any luck yet. If anyone wants to load a working one for me, you can have the Froggy unit as a thank you! :) }
That's all you have to do. Then, leave me a comment letting me know that you're a Facebook fan. I'll choose five winners on Wednesday, so go like me! :) **P.S. Thanks for the freebies! I taught this at the beginning of the year (around Halloween using Halloween words/sounds). I was amazed at how many of my kids forgot what onomatopoeias were when they were sharing this page of their electronic portfolio during conferences. This is perfect for a little refresher!
ReplyDeleteMy kids also love the Froggy books. We've noticed that many times the print in the words FROGGY on the cover match something in the picture. The books also often start in his bedroom and his quilt is always different and matches the theme of the book. (or maybe the print on the cover) He always has his window open in his room, and a box of toys at the end. Thanks for creating this unit. It looks very awesome!
